If we had not been able to get your help, I fear that my husband would never have regained any ability to swallow liquids or take food by mouth. You inspired great faith in him that he would be able to start eating again ... the progress he made under your care is just amazing and we will always be grateful to you |
Developing simple and personal tools to support the client and those around them, Mary’s professional but relaxed style develops communication skills that the entire team benefit from. If we could change anything it it that we would have brought Mary into the MDT alongside the Psychologist and before the rest of the MDT. It doesn’t matter what the message you’re trying to communicate, if you don’t know how to communicate to the client, |
I have found Mary to be an excellent practitioner and an asset to my client’s team of therapists. She was able to work with the client on a 1:1 basis, understanding the client’s needs quickly and identifying goals with the client to work on. I particularly liked that Mary was client focussed. My client reported that Mary was fantastic to work with and progress was measurable and clearly defined. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mary to work with clients who have sustained brain injuries and hope to work with her again in the future.

From the offset I said to Mary 'in hospital all Mum was asked is what’s the most important aspect of her communication and what would she like to work on e.g. reading, writing with her left arm etc. It was a stupid question because isn't the most important part of communication to be able to TALK and thats all we want to focus on. Mum needs to be able to talk to us and this is the only important thing to all of us.' Mary took on board what we said and that is all she focused on.
When we met Mary my mum couldn't string a sentence together .... now after only 10-11 months, Mum can ask us questions, she can hold a conversation, she is using massive words and longer sentences and she is making sense. She's learnt techniques on how to express herself when having a bad day with her speech and life/communication is just a lot easier and better!
Mary recognised that Mum was probably beyond one to one speech therapy unless she wanted to work on things like reading and writing, so Mary has found us a group to attend for people with aphasia in order to move on to the next challenge on learning to communicate in groups and more than 1-1.
We would highly recommend Mary and although speech therapy is expensive you can't put a price on being able to communicate using speech.

Mary’s initial assessment was thorough and comprehensive whilst also being very personal, understanding and compassionate in a time that was very challenging for our whole family ...... Mary’s friendly and caring approach throughout the therapy programme enabled the therapy to proceed smoothly whilst also being enjoyable and productive ... Mary has been a great source of strength for our family in very challenging circumstances and we would thoroughly recommend Mary to anyone in need of professional therapy.

I engaged the services of Mary to help with a client who wished to change his will, sadly his stroke had left him with minimal speech. There were many legalities that needed to be conveyed to the client to ascertain that he had testamentary capacity. Mary made this so easy to relay to the client and for him to communicate his understanding, she also prepared a wonderful report to support the validity of the Will. I highly recommend her professional services.
Mark Dunkley - Probate Executive (Streeter Marshall Solicitors, Croydon), April 2016
Mary's work as a speech therapist was excellent. She not only gave exceptional therapy classes but most of all gave V the chance to communicate with people and to get his confidence back, which he had lost after his stroke. So, I cannot thank her enough for bringing V back to us with confidence in being with people.
